POLAND MUSIC EXPORT MUSIC RECOMMENDATIONS :

BLISKO POLA :  “Some say there are no miracles and revelations are charlatans invention. It’s not true. Wonders will never cease. To everyone in a different way. To me they reveal themselves in the form of records like Blisko Pola. It’s true, the city of Lodz, Poland is close to the fields. It’s surrounded by one big field, actually. But the band’s music has nothing to do with unleavened folksiness. It’s sounds of the highest level. It’s the minimum of expression cumulated in the maximum of emotion.” – wafp Made up of members of some of Poland’s most exciting alternative bands (L.Stadt, Fonovel or TRYP to name a few) BLISKO POLA is a four-piece that combines, gracefully and emotionally, ballad with rock, free jazz with ambient, trance with blues, psychedelic with modern classic. They take You for the ethereal and unpretentious trip through the most intimate parts of their world. The band has performed at european festivals like Popkomm, Glimps or the biggest Polish alternative fest, OFF Festival as well as almost all the greatest clubs in Poland, now turning their heads into new directions.

SJON :  Polish band founded in 2011 in Lodz.

Sjon was initiated by Kacper Kaczmarek, who for a long time before the band was finally formed arranged and recorded peaces which he had composed. He invited his brother, Bartosz Kaczmarek (bass guitar), whom he shared a musical interests with, to co-operate. Then the next members Kamil Gorzeń (guitar) and Michał Kowalczyk (drums) joined Sjón. The name of the band comes from an Icelandic writer and novelist Sigurjon Birgir Sigurðsson widely known as Sjon. The band members have been inspired by Icelandic literature, which was associated with their fondness for musicians of the northern countries as well as Icelandic artist, Björk.

The band began performing in clubs in Lodz and they were met with very favorable reviews. Sjon had their first spotlight  in UK during british tour, the band performed with one the best known polish band – Myslovitz. The next success of the group was a gig at Heinekeen Open’er Festival 2012 – the main outdoor / summer polish music festival. They performed on the first day of the festival on Talent Stage. It is worth mentioning that the band lived to see a concert at one of the most prestigious music festivals in less than a year of existence. An important moment for the band was meeting of the band leader Kacper Kaczmarek and Marcin Powalski, who quickly joined the group as guitarist and keyboardist.
The musical style of Sjón was inspired, among others, by both rock and electronic music. Sjón get inspiration from british music (Radiohead, Portishead, Bloc Party) and Nordic music (Björk, Sigur Ross). Spatial sound of compositions is achieved through extensive use of effects, mainly guitar and computer-made ones. What is characteristic for the band is the distinctive and falsetto-like vocal with lots of deep reverb.

TWILITE : This band has nothing to do with sweet vampire blood or adolescent hysteria. Not yet in any case. These Polish friends released their second album last year, under the title QUIET GIANT and can now harvest what they have sown with their unique sound. Vulnerable voices and acoustic guitars like José Gonzalez are combined into a varied set of solid songs and beautiful dashes of melancholy.

Ideal for those who love the mix of unadulterated indie and singer-songwriter music.

JAZZPOSPOLITA :  Since the release of their debut EP ‘Almost Splendid’ in 2010, an album incorporating classic skill with imaginative melodies, Jazzpospolita have played their fingers to the bone to get their jazz fusion to the masses. And with a host of festivals and over 150 gigs – notably supporting Bonobo not so long ago – they show no signs of letting up any time soon. Poland has a rich Jazz heritage and it is clear their compatriot’s passion for this genre has filtered into this supremely gifted quartet from Warsaw. Their appreciation of the traditional in their music is evident – but their desire to experiment and push things forward is obvious. Second album entitled ‘Impulse’ takes inspiration from many different genres – the resulting sound is hard to pigeonhole but so, so good to hear. One minute gliding along on with melodic guitar riffs, the next switching to hard and groovy. This band will always keep you guessing. It has been already widely acclaimed by fans and journalists. Release of ‘Impulse’ was accompanied by a huge concert tour consisting of more than 50 shows including gigs in Poland, Denmark, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria and Great Britain. On 9th November Jazzpospolita comes up with a new album – ‘RePolished Jazz’. It consists of 2 CD: re-edition of well-known EP from 2009 and 6 brand new remixes made by most talented producers known to members of Jazzpospolita.

XXANAXX –  are a Polish electronic music duo from Warsaw, formed in 2012. The band consists of Klaudia Szafrańska (vocals) and Michał Wasilewski a.k.a Lance Flare (instrumentals). Klaudia age 19 and Voo age 31 formed XXANAXX in 2012. Klaudia is originally from Konin, while Michał is from Szczytno. They’ve met in Warsaw. Klaudia after appearing in Polish edition of X Factor was looking for a producer and Lance Flare was in a search for a vocalist. Both needed just one meeting to decide they want to cooperate with each other. They share the same interest in experimental electronic music. Their compositions are full of anologue sounds, deep bases, ambient reverbs and their beloved Roland TR 808 drums. This mixture combined with Klaudia’s voice makes an unusual music experience that takes listener to a higher level of relaxation. The genres that they feel connected to is chillwave, witch house and electronica. At this very moment the duo is working on their first LP, the first single titled Disappear was released at the beginning of December 2012.

LITTLE WHITE LIES :  Once they met at the rehearsal room just to release everyday stress and make some noise for fun. After two bottles of wine they got into instruments and started to improvise. To their great surprise, the mess they were creating began to form a harmonious whole. That night they decided to create Little White Lies – a combination of minimalism and energy. Since march 2011 they’ve been working on the album, using the guitar and the percussion machine only. Distorted sounds, simple monotonous bit, fast tempo, two expressive vocals, fug and erotic tension – that’s all they need to seduce the audience. In January 2012 they finished their debut album ‘Devils in Disguise’. The album was recorded and produced by Paweł Cieślak in ‘Hasselhoff Studio’ and released on FYH!Records November 5th 2012.

NIECHEC :

(English: DISLIKE) is a brand new voice on the Polish alternative scene. Although the band draw on rich traditions of native jazz, they are extensively inspired by post rock,  psychedelia and film music.

Their big asset is a fresh and rebellious (that is to say… unhumble?) attitude to composing and playing live. As it is derived from maintream jazz, some may call it avant-garde and controversial, but on the other hand their music is easy to approach. This is what makes their crossover music comprehensible not only for the jazz public, but for alternative rock fans too. Up to now, the band has performed at Heineken Open’er Festival and was appreciated by the main Polish public radio station “PR3” as a “Hope of The Year”. The debut album of Niechęć called “Death in a soft fur coat” was released on 1 April 2012.

ROBOT HOUSE :

Don’t be fooled by a mechanical camouflage. Robot House doesn’t play house. The name of the band is a result of holiday’s repeats of Futurama and shows well the way of thinking of this four: a cool name?, let’s take it! It’s the same with music: a cool theme?, let’s take it! There is no chance that something won’t be played by them becuase it doesn’t suit their style.

The only determinant of Robot House’s style for their own sake is fun of playing.
Some of their pieces are higly complex, some really simple; some are very melodic and cheerful, some bleak; some with vocal, come without it…
Not without a meaning is a fact that in the band doesn’t exist one leader, each of the four plays on equal terms. To implement this rule they swap instruments with themselves, what makes every gig quite an interesting show .

MAGNIFICENT MUTTLEY : The story of the band called Magnificent Muttley or as they call themselves unofficially – ‘Three Muttley Dogs’ began in march 2010. Passionate about the music they love and the friendship they share they decided to create a new quality in polish alternative music. Their main inspiration is John Frusciante. Fearless of all the fashion oriented acts, dress codes and what not’s, they started playing music. Really good, testosterone and humor driven music.

19 WIOSEN :This project was born in 1989 in Lodz, central Poland. It is almost one million habitants city, called “polish Manchester” because of XIX century factrories architecture, fallen industry and full of unemployment and off course… strong tradition of underground and specific alternative music. This strange town with jewish, russian and german roots is probably one of the biggest film and cinema centers in the world. Very important town about the history of polish Jews and the Holocaust. Before strong industrial center and proud of socialist Poland, now full of beggar families living from recyckling, old “gits” with tatooed faces and … artists. The main center of industrial music, crust punk, techno, drum’n’bass electro and dark goth wave.. But anyway 19 Wiosen created their oryginal style, very influented by the spirit of Lodz.

The authors of the project were two fans of the pre – punk (f.ex.The Stooges), glam rock, new romantic and dark avantgarde fans – Frank, the guitar player and Pryt – the poet and singer. Later they meet the electric organ player Fagot, one of the most original persons in the Lodz punk scene. He was big fan of J.S. Bach organ music, barocco flame and… italo disco music. Such surrealist mix should create something new. First, 19 Springs recorded their favourite cover songs, from Alphaville and Drupi (italo music) to polish 30s divas (Hanna Ordonówna) and 60s big bit and “estrada” musicians (Piotr Szczepanik, Filipinki).
First lyrics of 19 Springs was subjects of unhappy love mixed up with hard, “no hope no fear” minded dark poetry of Pryt (f.ex. “…fucking shit all the time”).
Almost all of 19 Springs players were active squatters this time.

MILOOPA : Named after a popular baby food in the 80-ties, Miloopa doesn’t put a limit on the creativity since the early years . Influenced by organic and synthetic textures of various music cultures, the band developed it’s sound towards unique mix of live and electronics .

The 2005 debut album NUTRITION FACTS included guest vocals by mc Blu Rum 13 (Dj Vadim, Kid Koala, Luke Vibert) and Miloopa’s tasty 2006 EP Come’n’get me was packed in a real meat-can! The second studio album UNICODE (2008) was Miloopa’s first collaboration with Roli Mosimann , who’s production credits go to Faith No More (”Album Of The Year”), JoJo Mayer & Nerve , The Young Gods, The The, Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, Einstuerzend Neubauten, New Order, The Swans, Wiseblood among others). Unicode serves a rich palette of sounds from Breakbeat, Drum’n’bass, Jungle, Dubstep to Soul and Downtempo moods. Guest appearences on the album inlcude Tom Fronza on didgeridoo and Ganesh Anandan on percussion and throat singing. On the newest release OPTICA (2011) Miloopa is pushing musical limits further than ever before. The open nature of the new album draws a picture of a band with no boundaries, with great ability to condense multi-colored shadows of various musical styles. Miloopa leaded by bass player Bond and singer Natalia Lubrano brakes down many barriers of pop, rock, soul, world and electronic music. Their cooperation with swiss producer Roli Mosimann has been a big factor for a distinctive – one of a kind – organic sound. Optica has also become a ground for new collaborations with abstract hip-hop pioneers Anti Pop Consortium and Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset. Since 2001, Miloopa has played numerous venues, tours and major festivals throughout Europe incl. Sziget, Creamfields, Fete De La Musique, Be2gether, United Islands of Prague, Open’er , Green Valley, Summer of Music , Szene Lustenau, performed in Great Britain, France, Holland, Sweden, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Luxembourg …
